Human Security includes the principle that living in harmony with the reality of the natural world and its regenerative processes must be included in how states pursue security for their citizens. Presently states pursue security based on the ideologies of human created institutions. The reality we face today includes security issues regarding food, climate, water, oceanic health, and physical health ranging from malnutrition to pandemic diseases. Abusive practices have made these matters of global impact that actually, in many instances, endanger every person by destroying the ecosystems upon which civilization depends. The misuse of science and technology in the service of greed and fear is causing these dangers.
The institution of the state has become an idol, an end in itself, such that we protect it with weapons of such enormous destructive capacity that if used will kill us all. Ironically, the more we perfect nuclear weapons the less security we obtain. The state is a tool to address real human needs rather than an end in itself. It is a human creation which means it can be molded to meet our needs. The climate and the oceans cannot be molded. We must adjust to them.
The pandemic has made it clear that a virus needs no passport and that the codification of adversity as an approach to national security is a hurdle to achieve the necessary cooperation to achieve real security. Real security is based on meeting real human needs -- Human Security.
